Ok, so really I have no clue what any of those dessert names MEAN, but this is baked apples with a crunchy granola-like topping.  It’s healthy, delicious, easy to make, and PACKED with fall flavors!

My mom makes desserts like this with lots of different fruits and they’re great all the time, so this is the best imitation I could come up with.

This is a great dessert to take to people’s houses when you’re totally for realsies over pies – they’re delicious but tend to get overdone this time of year, in my humble opinion.

There are other desserts out there, after all!

This is definitely a dessert where the fruit SHINES, so feel free to add more of the topping if you’d like, or more butter and flour for a more cakey-finish.  This is versatile!

I made a small batch of this dessert, but it could be expanded a LOT to feed more than two people – apples are cheap, so why the heck not?

  • 6 medium apples
  • 3 tablespoons flour
  • juice of 1 lemon
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
For the topping:
  • 1/4 cup oatmeal (regular oats, not the quick-cooking kind)
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon allspice
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg

First, peel the apples and cut them into small pieces.

Put the apples in a big bowl, then sprinkle them with the flour.

Then add the sugar and lemon juice.

Excellent!  Combine this all together and put in a baking dish.

Now grab the topping ingredients:

Ignore the lemon, we already used that.

For the topping, melt the butter in a separate bowl – just microwave it for 10 seconds or so.  If it’s not completely melted it’s perfectly fine!

Add the remaining sugar and flour, oatmeal, and spices to the butter.

Mix the topping together, and add some more flour or oatmeal if the mixture seems wet – we want it crumbly, not pasty and sticky.  I added some more dry ingredients to achieve that consistency.

Now, preheat your oven to 350F and put the topping all over the sugared/floured/lemoned (?) apples.

That looks delicious, doesn’t it!   Cover this with tin foil and bake for 45 minutes, then stick a fork in the apples.  They should be tender!  Continue to cook uncovered for about 10 more minutes until the topping is crispy.

Doesn’t that look fabulous!  It’s super duper cozy and wonderful!

Note: make this ahead of time!  Get the apples and topping ready up to three days before you want to eat the dessert, then bake it for an hour or so right before you eat it.  Easy!

Serve this with whipped cream, ice cream, or any toppings of your choice!  I actually eat it plain because I want my healthy dessert to actually, you know, stay healthy.  I’m weird like that.  Enjoy this one, guys!
